SALEM – The 16th Annual Super Kids Race, a soap box derby for challenged children, will be held Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The race begins in front of Salem City Hall. This year will feature 13 racers who will compete for a chance to go to the National Super Kids Race at Derby Downs in Akron.
The racers compete in double soap box derby cars that are provided for them, along with helmets and T-shirts, thanks to generous sponsors. The challenged child is the racer but the car is controlled by a ghost driver. This year, most of the ghost drivers are members of the Salem Schools Interact Club. Members of the football team are also helping with moving the cars from the bottom of the track, back to the starting line.
The event includes several new features this year – the Kooltime Kruisers car club from Lisbon will be displaying some of its hotrods in the north parking lot of the Methodist Church and Tim Greenisen will be bringing the Frost Top Root Beer Mug to the race, which will be on display in front of city hall.
The race is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the racers, check out the cool cars and view the Root Beer Mug or pick up refreshments at the concession stand that is operated by the Faithful Hearts group from the Methodist Church.
